* FULLY BOOKED * European Union Exchange during Tall Ships Races: Race 2 – Youth voyage (age 15-25 years). Start your journey in Amsterdam and spend 2 nights with other trainees in a hostel. Explore the city before embarking on the Morgenster on the 22.07. From Amsterdam you will sail to Stavanger (NO). This journey will give you time to get to know the Ship and your fellow Windseekers to start your race all prepared. The Race will lead from Norway, aross the North Sea to Harlingen, the Netherlands. Besides Sail Training, you will join an intercultural program. Make international friends, learn how to handle the Ship, stand watch together with your fellow trainees. Participating countries are: Italy, Norway, Netherlands, Hungary and Belgium. For Windseekers aged 15-25 only, ages 26-28 at request: info@windseeker.org

Programme Outline

The Tall Ships Races is the biggest annual sailing race of the year. The 2018 edition will be the 62nd event and is scheduled to take place on the North Sea between 4 ports in 4 different countries. In this voyage you will take part in Race 2 from Norway to the Netherlands. Take part in harbour celebrations, meet your fellow trainees and set course across the North Sea. Expect a warm welcome in port, with Crew Parties, parades and many other activities.

As a Windseeker Trainee on board the Morgenster you will be a part of the crew, meaning you will join your peers on watches day and night, and take active part in the life on the ship. You’ll be hoisting sails, steering the ship, climbing the masts (voluntarily) practicing seamanship skills and learning the art of navigation, guided by the professional crew. And you will sail to win the race!

The International Exchange program is a great mix of sail training adventure and multicultural experience. With many nationalities on board you will enjoy national dinner parties, debates, games to bridge the cultural differences. During the International Exchanges there will always be a professional sailing crew present to steer the Ship safely to the port, while mentors will organize your activities and be there if you need someone to talk to.

You will be divided into watches and work on the Ship in shifts of 4 hours on, 8 hours off. That means two watches per day: one in daytime and one in the night, as the Ship doesn’t stop sailing when it gets dark! Don’t worry, your sleep pattern will soon adjust. The language on board will be English – simple English. Most of your activities will be carried out as a team. By the time you reach the destination port you will be like a family. Warning: saying goodbye won’t be easy!

Ports

With more bicycles than people, cycling is an integral part of Amsterdam's DNA. Hop on and see the city like the locals do! Winding waterways, idyllic bridges and historic buildings - one of the most memorable ways to truly see Amsterdam is from the canals. Amsterdam has a full cultural agenda showcasing the very best festivals, nightlife, exhibitions & events, plus there is enough practical tourist info, hotel, museum, excursion & attraction listings, you won't miss a thing!

Harlingen is a trade and fishing port in Friesland, the Netherlands. The town itself is over a thousand years old, and you’ll find several historic streets in the old city centre. Its small size makes it easy to explore the town on foot. In 2014 Harlingen was a port of call for the Tall Ships Races. The town operates ferry lines to the Frisian Islands, a unique nature reserve with populations of seals, birds, and other wildlife. With its ‘gezellige’ pubs the town is a great place for a stopover.
