European Union Exchange during Tall Ships Races: Race 1 – Youth voyage (15-25 years). This voyage will start in Esbjerg (DK) and you will sail to Sunderland (UK) and back to Esbjerg. The Tall Ships Races begin in Sunderland with an opening festival, after which you will race back to Denmark. Besides Sail Training you will also join an intercultural program with games and each day a typical dinner from one of the participating countries. Make international friends, learn how to handle the Ship, stand watch together with your fellow trainees. The beginning and end of this journey is in Esbjerg which means you can buy a return flight. The participating countries for this European Exchange are: Denmark, Netherlands, UK, Sweden and France. Applications are open for Windseekers aged 15-25 only, ages 26-28 at request: info@windseeker.org

Programme Outline

The Tall Ships Races is the biggest annual sailing race of the year. The 2018 edition will be the 62nd event and is scheduled to take place on the North Sea between 4 ports in 4 different countries. In this voyage you will take part in Race 1 from the UK to Denmark. Take part in opening celebrations, meet your fellow trainees, and then wave goodbye to spectators on land and set course across the North Sea. Expect a warm welcome in Esbjerg, with Crew Parties, parades and many other activities.

As a Windseeker Trainee on board the Morgenster you will be a part of the crew, meaning you will join your peers on watches day and night, and take active part in the life on the ship. You’ll be hoisting sails, steering the ship, climbing the masts (voluntarily) practicing seamanship skills and learning the art of navigation, guided by the professional crew. And you will sail to win the race!

The International Exchange is a very special type of journey where connecting to people from other cultures is as important as sailing. Aside from doing everything to sail the Ship to the destination port, you will enjoy additional cultural activities such as national dinners, debates and games. While the professional Crew will ensure your journey will be safe, during International Exchanges there are also mentors on board who will organize your activities and help you adjust to life on board.

The Ship sails day and night and that means you will have to be there to navigate it! You will be divided into watches and work in shifts of 4 hours on, 8 hours off. That means two watches per day: one in daytime and one in the night. Don’t worry, your sleep pattern will soon adjust. The language on board will be English – simple English. Most of your activities will be carried out as a team. By the time you reach the destination port you will be like a family. Saying goodbye won’t be easy!

Ports

Esbjerg is a beautiful coastal city in the South-West of Denmark, with the second biggest harbour in Denmark – a lively place full of fishing and shipping activities. You can observe the town's maritime history in its attractions: from the Fisheries- and Maritime Museum, Esbjerg Skibet statue to the Men at Sea monument, everything brings you back to the sea. Visit also the Ribe Vikinge Center, a fun outdoor museum where you will meet the Vikings themselves!
