Isafjordur (IS) - Reykjavik (IS)

17 August - 03 September 2017

Isafjordur – Reykjavik – Return to the wild wild west. Fjords are waiting to be explored. First a visit to Hornstrandir and then it is a scenic sail to Vatnsfordur Nature Reserve, the place for endless hikes along the shores of Vatndalsvan, and its rich bird life. The red-throated and great northern diver as well as the colourful harlequin duck are known to nest in the area. Departing from Vatnsfordur we leave the West Fjords and head for the largest of the Breidafjordur Islands, Flatey. It is a short hop to this little gem. Covered in bright yellow Buttercups it sets itself apart. After having enjoyed the tranquillity of this superb little Island our journey south continues. For all Windseekers, minimum age 15 years.

Programme Outline

Ports

Isafjordur (meaning ‘fjord of ice’) is a small port town in the northwest of Iceland. It is a major access point to the nature reserve on the Hornstrandir Peninsula, an uninhabited wilderness area to which ferries run weekly during summer. Despite its small population of 2600 people, the town has a relatively urban feel. It is considered a centre for alternative music and there’s even a hospital. Have a look around in the Maritime museum or go for a tour of the waterfalls and the nearby fjords.

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland. As you approach from the sea, you’ll sea a modern city skyline with snowy volcanic mountains in the background. Reykjavík is quite cosmopolitan, with plenty of culture and entertainment. Go for a night on the town, or find a tour that takes you to see the glaciers, geysers, and volcanoes for which Iceland is famous. Reykjavík’s climate is less cold than you’d expect. At Nauthólsvík you’ll even find a geothermically heated beach!
