Ullapool – Reykjavik – In Search of Vikings! Orkneys, Shetlands, Faroes. One of the highlights of the 2017 sailing season. Setting sail from Ullapool, a course north is set to first visit Stornoway, theOrkneys and then onwards to the Shetland Islands. Fair Isle is the first stop, then on to Foula or the mainland of the Shetlands. When the winds are good, a crossing of less than 24 hours will take you to the Faroe Islands. So much unspoiled nature, amazing walks. Open for all ages, minimum age 15 years.
Ullapool, despite its small size is the largest settlement for many miles around and a major tourist destination of Scotland. The village was founded in 1788 as a herring port by the British Fisheries Society. A few Cordyline australis or New Zealand cabbage trees are grown in the town and are often mistaken for palms. The harbour is still the edge of the village, used as a fishing port, yachting haven, and ferry port. Enjoy the beautiful surroundings here.
Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland. As you approach from the sea, you’ll sea a modern city skyline with snowy volcanic mountains in the background. Reykjavík is quite cosmopolitan, with plenty of culture and entertainment. Go for a night on the town, or find a tour that takes you to see the glaciers, geysers, and volcanoes for which Iceland is famous. Reykjavík’s climate is less cold than you’d expect. At Nauthólsvík you’ll even find a geothermically heated beach!
