Svalbard Expedition. This trip takes you around the famous island of Svalbard (Spitsbergen). Explore the arctic conditions around you, look out for reindeer, arctic foxes, walruses and birds. Expect low temperatures, long days and pristine conditions of the place rarely visited by humans. Bring rubber boots and warm clothing! Send a postcard from the the northernmost post office in the world, tour the glaciers, visit beautiful fjords. The itinerary below is subject to changes due to weather conditions and other safety issues. Open for all windseekers, minimum age 15 years.
This intense exploration of Svalbard will start and end in the main town: Longyearbyen. After arrival you will meet the crew and trainees and have safety instructions. In favorable winds you might sail to Tryghamna, anchoring for the night.
Then you will head to the bird cliff Alkhornet, the breeding ground for thousands of kittiwakes. Continuing towards Eidembukta, it's possible that you will see your first reindeer of the trip in here, and perhaps even some polar bear tracks.
Sailing farther to the north you will pass Poolepynten, a great place to spot walruses on land. The water is deep, so you can approach them quite closely. With luck you’ll see minke and beluga whales. Sailing to Kongsfjorden with its mighty glacier at the end, you might visit the starting point of North Pole expeditions led by Amundsen and Nobile. You might also see arctic foxes here.
Continuing the journey to the Fjords Kross, you will see the immense 14th of July Glacier in the distance.
Soon after, you will arrive at the 80th parallel! Then on to one of the most photographed fjords of Svalbard: the Magdalena Fjord. Take a shelter in anchorage at Trinity Harbour.
Heading towards Liefdefjord, your chance to see the polar bears increases. The views around here are breathtaking – don’t forget to charge your camera! Keep in mind that due to ice, this region might be impossible to reach some years.
Leaving this northern part of Spitsbergen you will head south, sailing through the Fuglefjord, Smeerenburg in the direction of Isfjorden, where you will anchor for the last time at Trygghamna.
The last leg will bring you back to Longyearbyen where you will disembark Anne-Margaretha, having lived a great northern adventure!
Longyearbyen is a capital of Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, located on the Spitsbergen island. If you want to experience the arctic climate, although tempered by a warm current, Spitsbergen is the place to visit. Look for seabirds, reindeer and marine mammals but watch out for polar bears! Don’t be fooled by the town’s remote location and small size: you can find there two museums, art galleries and a cinema.
