A Coruña (ES) - Dunkirk (FR)

26 July - 08 August 2020

International Exchange for all nationalities during The Tall Ships Races (Race 3). Board the Thalassa in Spanish A Coruna and leave port in a Parade of Sail with other ships, amid excited spectators on land. Set the sails together with the crew and take course for France. Cross the Bay of Biscay in an exciting race between dozens of large and small vessels. Learn to sail an impressive Tall Ship, from unpacking the sails to steering and navigating. Make friends for different countries and participate in fun activities prepared by the mentors. Reach Dunkirk, where you will spend the last 2 days of the trip. Enjoy the big sailing festival in port for the finishing of the Tall Ships Races. Take part in Crew Parade, Crew Party, concerts, fireworks and more! This journey is open to Windseekers aged 15-25, ages 25-28 at request.

The Tall Ships Races

The first ever Tall Ships Race took place in 1956. 20 tall ships sailed from Great Britain to Portugal to promote Sail Training and international friendship. Originally meant as a single event, the race gained huge public interest and soon turned into an annual event, organized by Sail Training International. Each year dozens of Tall Ships, as well as small ships and yachts gather for races, but also harbour events: Crew Parades, Crew Parties, competitions, concerts, fireworks and much more!

In 2020 the Tall Ships go back to the Atlantic coast of Europe. Race 1 will start in Lisbon and end in Cadiz. From there the ships will sail to A Coruna in a mixed leg including several days of racing and then some more relaxed sailing. The final leg will take them across the Bay of Biscay and into the English Channel to Dunkirk. Will you join the adventure?

Ports

A Coruña is a port town in the north west of Spain. Here you will find the Tower of Hercules, a lighthouse that has been in operation for 1.800 years! The town itself is an affluent commercial and tourism hub, with plenty of things to see and do. Visit the popular beaches, explore the city centre, or sample some of the many cultural activities. The Aquarium Finisterrae lets you explore the marine life of the region. But if you prefer your fish on a plate, A Coruña’s restaurants can help you out.

Dunkirk is the northernmost city in France and one if its biggest harbours. It lies very close to the Belgian border and dates back to middle ages when it was a fishing village. Dunkirk’s maritime heritage is clearly visible, and celebrated. You can visit the Port Museum (Musée Portuaire), climb to the top of Le Beffroi de Saint-Eloi for unforgettable views or relax in one of the multiple seafront cafes and bars.
