Twister:
Tortola (VG) - Amsterdam (NL)

18 March - 01 May 2020

The price includes one-way flight from the Netherlands to British Virgin Islands. Expedition Horizon 2. Let the Twister take you on an unfrgettable sailing adventure with sustainability theme. Board the ship in the Caribbean and visit some iconic islands before setting course for Europe. Enjoy the relaxed sailing in the tropics and then take on the challenge of crossing the Atlantic under sails. Spend 44 days on board, learning to sail a traditional vessel. Set the sails, steer, navigate; fish and cook; relax. Fish for microplastics in the ocean and participate in global research. Give yourself over to the adventure: only the departure and arrival dates are set, otherwise you will go where the wind takes you. Enjoy the digital detox, out of mobile service for many days at a time. Become one with nature and find yourself again. Open to Windseekers aged 17-30.

About the Journey

Your expedition will start in Tortola, in the British Virgin Islands. Depending on the winds you might visit Jamaica, Cuba or Bermuda before you set the course for the open ocean. Spend days living in the rhythm of sea watches, enjoying digital detox and finding a simpler life. Read a book, chat with your fellow trainees, look for dolphins and whales in the waves and admire the stars. Make a stop in the remote Azores to stretch your legs before making your way to Amsterdam.

Join the watches, working in shifts of 4 hours on / 8 hours off, day and night! Learn to navigate by stars and modern instruments, communicate outside the ship, recognize weather patterns and use forecasts to plan your route. Set the sails, learn how to trim them for the best performance, learn which sails to combine with each other and how to maintain the rigging. Peek into the engine room and help with the daily maintenance of the vessel.

Bring out the manta trawl to fish for microplastic in the ocean and analyse the samples. Discuss the problems and solutions with your fellow participants. Consider the pros and cons of crossing the ocean under sails. Conserve the limited supply of fresh water on board and carefully sort the trash for better storage on your long journey. Use eco-friendly products to clean the ship and avoid unnecessary plastic.

Get a mentor crew member and discuss your motivation for this expedition. Keep track of your personal and nautical goals. Spend weeks living an adventure: outdoor, active, with sparse mobile service. Practice teamwork and leadership, get out of your comfort zone and enjoy the challenges. Make friends with like-minded people of similar ages and bring home unforgettable memories and photos!
