Christian Radich:
Ålesund (NO) - Shetland (GB) - Haugesund (NO)

01 August - 10 August 2017

Join Christian Radich westwards! Over thousand years ago the Vikings have sailed westwards to Shetland, Orkney and the Hebrides. There are many rumors about their brutal behavior, and most of it is exaggerated. Most of the Vikings had good intentions and they were traders. Today the Norwegians are very welcome on these islands. We will be visiting Lerwick in Shetland, a city with small shops, restaurants and bars. On our way back to Norway and towards Haugesund, we sail past the Orkneys, and if we have time, we will go ashore here, too. In Kirkwall, the famous cathedral is called St. Magnus Cathedral. It was founded in 1137 by a Viking Earl Rognvald, in honour of his uncle St. Magnus. The natural harbor of Scapa Flow played a role both in the 1st and 2nd World War. In Haugesund the annual “Sildajazz” festival attracts 50,000 visitors. Open for all Windseekers, minimum age 15 years. (Age 12-15 accompanied by an adult). Prenight and afternight possible – 60 EUR (B&B).

Ports

Ålesund is an intimate harbor amongst beautiful fjords, mountains and islands. Consisting out of seven islands, Ålesund is a modern city. In 1904 the city, once built largely of wood, was completely burned down by a sea of flames. After a period of planning, the town was rebuilt in stone, brick, and mortar in Jugendstil. Visit the Atlantic Sea Park on a rainy day or, if the weather is nice, go to the Sunnmoere Museum to see historic Norwegian houses and Viking relics.

Haugesund is a town and municipality in Rogaland county, Norway with a history of herring fishing. The town is surrounded by several parks and recreational areas, perfect for getting a taste of Norway's nature. Visit the Nordvegen History Centre and Viking Settlement open-air museum and learn about the fascinating history of Vikings. Go to the Karmsund Folkemuseum and take a walk along the Haraldsgata street for a real feel of this small town's life.
