Gallant:
Hamburg (DE) - Vlaardingen (NL)

10 May - 13 May 2015

Get ready for an open sea experience with the Gallant, on a Journey from Hamburg to Vlaardingen across the North Sea.On this port-to-port delivery leg, you’ll be a temporary part of the crew – the perfect opportunity to improve your navigation skills, learn more about ship systems and take the helm. The helpful crew will be happy to show you the ropes. The ever changing North Sea is the wild card on this journey. Prevaling winds are southwesterly, so you can expect several tacks on this tour along the Dutch coast. Before you arrive in Vlaardingen you’ll sail up the Maas river, between the titanic container vessels and oil tankers that frequent the port of Rotterdam. Open to Windseekers of all ages, minimum age 15 years (from age 12 years at request).

Ports

The port of Hamburg, on the river Elbe, is the second largest port in Europe. Hamburg has more than 40 theatres, 60 museums and 100 music venues and clubs. Hamburg was awarded the title of European Green Capital for 2011. Hamburg is noted for several festivals and regular events. Hafengeburtstag is a funfair to honor the birthday of the port of Hamburg with a party and a ship parade. Christmas markets in December are held at the Hamburg Rathaus square, among other places.

Vlaardingen is a port town in the Netherlands, close to Rotterdam. The town has long been famous for its fishing activities, especially herring. Nowadays there's not a whole lot to do in Vlaardingen, although the town has a very nice historic centre with several interesting buildings. Around Vlaardingen you'll find plenty of rural scenery and nature areas, as well as industrie. The big city of Rotterdam is just a short drive with public transportation, as are the Dutch beaches of Scheveningen.

Key points

  • "It was an absolute joy to steer for hours when the wind was blowing, and even when it was completely dead. I loved to see the sea, I loved the silence of the ocean."
