Oosterschelde:
Horta, Azores (PT) - La Rochelle (FR)

10 April - 25 April 2027

Join tall ship Oosterschelde in Horta, on the island of Faial for a journey that combines the exploration of Azores with Atlantic sailing to Europe. Begin your journey with a visit to Pico, dominated by its impressive volcano, and later visit Terceira. These first days offer a pleasant mix of sailing and time ashore. Green hills, steep cliffs, and small harbours create a relaxed atmosphere. After leaving the Azores, you will set course northeast, getting into the rhythm of life on board: helping with sails, taking the helm, and standing watch. Nights at sea reveal a vast, star-filled sky, this is true ocean sailing. After about a week, you will reach the Bay of Biscay, known for its unpredictable weather. Conditions vary greatly, but by then you’ll be well accustomed to the sea’s dynamics. Teamwork and attention are key on deck. Eventually, the towers of La Rochelle appear, a sight that has been welcoming ships for centuries. Bienvenue en France!
Open to Windseekers aged 18-73.

Ports

Horta is situated in the western part of the Archipelago of the Azores on the island of Faial. The marina is a primary stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic. Its walls and walkways are covered in paintings created by the crews of visiting ships. Peter’s Cafe Sport, located across from the marina, houses the island’s scrimshaw museum. A collection of artefacts carved from whale tooth and jawbone. This café is a point of reference for trans-Atlantic yachtsmen and sailors.

La Rochelle is a coastal city on the west coast of France, with three ports offering shelter from the Bay of Biscay. See the three historic towers of the old port as the 16th century protestant corsairs would have, take a day cycling to the ‘Île de Ré’ bridge-connected island to explore the quaint villages. Popular with cruisers and tourists, the seafront is a place to wine and dine, enjoying the region’s top cuisine.
