Join the Vega Gamleby for a EU Exchange “Erasmus+” programme, open to trainees from the following countries: Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands and the UK. Besides sailtraining, you also will join an intercultural programme during the Tall Ships Races You will start Skarhamn, close to Gotheborg and from there you will sail to Kristiandsand. From Kristiansand to Aalborg it will be a Race together with many other Tall ships. The Nautical theme of this European Union Exchange/ Erasmus+ program will be: “Skagen Explorers: Challenging ourselves to discover cultural identities in Europe”. Make new international friends, learn to handle the ship, and work together with your fellow trainees and the crew to sail the ship as quickly as you can toward the finish line in Aalborg. It promises to be a journey of epic discovery! For Windseekers age 15-28.

Programme Outline

Experience the famous Tall Ship Races (TSR). Meet people from all over the world. Learn how to sail this fine Topsail Schooner. No sailing experience needed! Mingle with other cultures during the European Union international youth exchange organised on board. Party during the festivals in the host ports. The professional crew teaches you everything you want to know about sailing and the Vega Gamleby. There is much to see and discover through the activities offered during the program.

Travel to the small port town of Skarhamn and board the Vega Gamleby for the Journey of a lifetime. Unpack your bags and start your discovery of the Ship immediately with your fellow Windseekers. Get comfortable with the crew, brace for the wind and start setting sails! There will be Windseekers from all over Europe joining you on this Journey, from Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands and the UK. By the time you arrive in Aalborg you’ll be one big family!

You'll participate in the watch rotation, once a day and once a night. Become a skilled sailor by learning from the professional crew. Set and trim the sails, steer the ship, help the cook and do odd jobs on deck and below. Together with your fellow Windseekers you work on your best racing time. The crew is there to guide you during your watch. At the end of your European Union International Youth Exchange, you and your team are a comfortable and skilled sailing team.

You sail from Skarhamn to Kristiansand, where you will meet the rest of the Tall Ship fleet. Now the race is on! Battle your way across Kattegat in competition with dozens of Tall Ships - a magnificent sight! This second leg of the Tall Ships Races 2015 is a bit shorter than normal, which means there is no room for error! Give it your all, and trust your Windseeker deckmates to do the same, in order to reach the finish quick as you can! In Aalborg you will be rewarded with an epic crew party.

Ports

Skarhamn, Sweden is the seat of the Tjorn Municipality, Vastra Gotaland County. Well known for its yachting activities and the Nordic Watercolor Museum (Akvarellmuseet). There is a unique quality of light on the island of Tjörn, that inspired several late 19th century painters. Its West Coast is scattered with typical fishing villages. Red-painted boat sheds stand in rows along the port, and labyrinthine streets wind between the tightly-packed white houses.

The final leg of the Tall Ships Races 2015 will finish in the grand port of Aalborg. Aalborg has had a love affair with The Tall Ships Races since 1999, when the city hosted the event for the first time. Aalborg is situated at the Liim Fiord where it was founded by Vikings over 1000 years ago. Today Aalborg is a modern city with visible historic roots. Its theatres, symphony orchestra, performance venues, and museums, make Aalborg a great place to wind down after an exhilarating Sail adventure.
