Programme Outline

Race 1 of the Tall Ships Races 2016 starts in Antwerp where you will embark the Alexander von Humboldt II and will sail to Lisbon in two weeks. The 10th of July the fleet will leave port and they will arrive around July the 22th in Lisbon. First you’re going to explore Antwerp and enjoy the Sail festival. The next day you will leave port, and set sail to start the race. On board you will feel the wind, hoist the sails together with other trainees.

You will be divided into watch groups and work together as a team. There will be about hundreds of Tall Ships around you. After this sailing trip you will end in the famous harbour of Lisbon. Will you be the first one that crossed the finish line!? In Lisbon you will a join the crew parade with your fellow Windseeker and other trainees who have taken part in the race. But there is also time to enjoy a lot of historic things to find in the city, like the Alfama or the Lisbon Cathedral.

Ports

This city in Belgium is the capital of Antwerp province. With a population of 510,610 it is the most populous city in Belgium. Its metropolitan area houses around 1,200,000 people. Antwerp is on the River Scheldt, linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde estuary. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking third in Europe and within the top 20 globally. There is a theory about the name Antwerp: "The wharf where ships berth".

Lisbon has a long and varied history as a major trading hub, much of which is still visible in the old city centre. Discover Alfama, the old quarters with its many old alleys, steps and the Lisbon Cathedral. The famous tram line 28 will get you there – an experience in and of itself. And be sure to check out a fado concert if you want to learn about saudade – loss, yearning and comfort, all rolled into one. Emotions that all seafarers will get to know one way or the other…
