Bark Europa:
Ascension Island (GB) - Horta (PT)

31 May - 29 June 2016

Ocean sailing; Equator Crossing and research. Remote islands, endless miles across the Atlantic, beautiful scenery, and a true Ocean sailing adventure, what more could a Windseeker want? Join Bark Europa for an epic journey from Ascension Island to the Azores. During your time at sea you’ll learn all about life on board. You’ll help set and trim the sails, do navigation and lookout duty, steer the ship and do odd jobs both on deck and below. But there’s also plenty of time for stargazing and staring at the horizon. Make new, lasting friendships with your fellow Windseekers, and exchange stories with the crew over a fine meal from the galley. Experience the magic of the night watch, when you are alone with the stars and the waves. It will be a Journey you will never forget. Open to all ages, minimum age 15 years.

Ports

Ascension Island is an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, roughly midway between the horn of South America and Africa. Historically, it has played a role as an important safe haven and coaling station to mariners and for commercial airliners during the days of international air travel by flying boats and during World War II was a naval and air station. The sparsely inhabited island is one of the most remote places in the world.

Horta is situated in the western part of the Archipelago of the Azores on the island of Faial. The marina is a primary stop for yachts crossing the Atlantic. Its walls and walkways are covered in paintings created by the crews of visiting ships. Peter's Cafe Sport, located across from the marina, houses the island's scrimshaw museum. A collection of artefacts carved from whale tooth and jawbone. This café is a point of reference for trans-Atlantic yachtsmen and sailors.
