Gosport (GB) - Blyth (GB)

21 August - 28 August 2016

Join the Maybe and her crew for a week and sail from Gosporth to Blyht. Start at the Solent and cross the English Channel and go north at the NorthSea. You will see a lot of vessels going north as well for Sail Blyth! The Tall Ships Races 2016 will be celebrating a diamond anniversary as it will be sixty years since the first Tall Ships race in 1956. And the North Sea Tall Ships Regatta will be held for only the second time in six years – so we are particularly pleased to be visiting two excellent, but contrasting ports. For Blyth in Northumberland, UK this is the first major Tall Ships event they have hosted and the town is eager to welcome the international fleet of Tall Ships. Open to all ages, minimum age 15 years.

Ports

The Gosport peninsula has 17 miles (27 km) of waterfront on Portsmouth Harbour and The Solent and is a maritime playground for all. Until the last quarter of the 20th century, Gosport was a major naval town. The pebble beach at Stokes Bay slopes steeply into the sea which is great to see. It offers fine views of the shipping going in and out of Portsmouth and Southampton and the many pleasure craft from the many marinas along The Solent and the Isle of Wight.

Blyth is a town in southeast Northumberland, England. On the coast, to the south of the River Blyth, where its name comes from. The main industries were coal mining and shipbuilding, with the salt trade, fishing and the railways also playing an role. Today, the port handles up to 1.5 million tonnes of cargo. Walk over the quayside or go to the beach. Visit the market place. The lighthouse “ High Light”, was built in 3 stages; 10,66m in 1788; in 1888 4,26m was added and the final 3,82 m in 1900.
