Oosterschelde:
Sal (CV) - Havana (CU)

26 February - 27 March 2018

Atlantic Crossing! From Palmeira we sail west. With the strong north-easterly trade wind we will be able to sail quickly to the Caribbean because the North Equatorial Current will be favourable for us. For some it will be an adjustment getting used to the movements of the ship. Therefore, we make a short stop on one of the most beautiful islands of Cape Verde: São Nicolau. Then the Atlantic is waiting for us. An ocean crossing is special and spectacular. The waves, the ocean swell and the beautiful skies never gets boring. And while the weather is very stable on these latitudes, wind direction and strength is variable. So there will always be something to do on deck. Our first stop in the Caribbean will be the island St Martin. We will stretch our legs after over 2000 nautical miles and we fill our stores with fresh fruit and vegetables. The second part of our trip will be in the Caribbean. In this area and in this time of year there is a big chance we will spot humpback whales with their babies. We leave the endless coral reefs of Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas east of us while we spot the west coast of Cuba. The island is so big that it will take us a few days before we arrive at our destination: Hemingway Marina, Cuba. Open for all ages, minimum age 15 years.

Ports

Sal is one of the three sandy eastern islands of the Cape Verde archipelago, together with Boa Vista and Maio. The island is a dream destination for windsurfing enthusiasts, due to its sandy beaches and persistent winds. Tourism is on the rise in Cape Verde, but outside of the beach resort of Santa Maria the island retains its relaxed feel. Explore the quiet streets with their brightly colored houses, the blue eye cave, and the saline flats. The sun shines 350 days a year, so bring sunscreen!

Havana is a place where time seems to have stopped, in a country for a long time closed to the public because of many political tensions. Architecture has been preserved from the ravages of modernism, colors, faded with time, are evidence of the splendor of the Spanish imprint. La Habana Vieja is a UNESCO heritage site. Discover the place that inspired Hemingway, ride a taxi particular and listen to the omnipresent music to submerge yourself in the unique Cuban atmosphere.
