Akureyri (IS) - Isafjordur (IS)

10 July - 23 July 2018

Akureyri – Isafjordur – Sailing with whales! Setting sail for the Island Hrisey, the first stretch of sailing on this trip will be amongst north Iceland’s most rugged mountains. Leaving Hrisey you will set sail into the Greenland sea with Grimsey Island as your next destination, famous for being inside the Arctic Circle. The shallow fjords and coast of Grimsey are uninhabited and rarely visited and you will have the chance to explore them. This voyage is the best opportunity to spot whales. As you will set sail around the north-west corner of Iceland, you will be able to spot them in the open water and even in the fjords. Open for all Windseekers, minimum age 15 years.

Programme Outline

Ports

Akureyri is a small city in northern Iceland. It is an important port and fishing centre. The Norse Viking Helgi Magri (the slim) Eyvindarson originally settled the area in the 9th century. The city is surrounded by mountains, the highest being Kista (1447 m) and another peak of 1538 m at the head of Glerádalur. Go hiking for a day over the mountains or along the water. Enjoy the quiteness here and the great views with snowy hilltops. Nature is beautiful here and offers great photo material.

Isafjordur (meaning ‘fjord of ice’) is a small port town in the northwest of Iceland. It is a major access point to the nature reserve on the Hornstrandir Peninsula, an uninhabited wilderness area to which ferries run weekly during summer. Despite its small population of 2600 people, the town has a relatively urban feel. It is considered a centre for alternative music and there’s even a hospital. Have a look around in the Maritime museum or go for a tour of the waterfalls and the nearby fjords.
