Join Wylde Swan, along with over 30 other trainees from 5 different countries, for the exploration of Denmark. Samsø is known for getting 100% of its electricity from wind power and biomass! Take part in cultural and educational programme with a focus on sustainability and circular economy and make international friends. For Windseekers aged 15-25 years, ages 26-28 at request. Additional fees may apply due to the necessity of becoming a member of partner organisation of your country (up to EUR 30).

Programme Outline

Join an Erasmus+ International Youth Exchange. Step on board Dutch Tall Ship Wylde Swan in Aarhus and sail along the Danish coast, visiting Copenhagen and the island of Samsø before making your way to the final destination: Esbjerg. Every participant will receive a Youth Pass certificate, outlining what they've learned during the journey. This is a European Union officially-recognized document for describing skills and competences.

This unique sailing journey is a perfect mix of Sail Training and cultural programs. You will sail the Ship with other participants from several different countries. While the captain and his crew will teach you how to sail a Tall Ship, the mentors will make sure that everyone feels good on board and has fun participating in various activities related to sustainability and with a focus on the solutions and challenges of a circular economy.

This journey is a part of a special programme, only for young people from the five mentioned countries. You will be a part of a small group of trainees from your own country, between other small groups. Spend the time on board sharing your customs and traditions with others, and get to know their own. Enjoy the national food from other countries, learn some phrases, jokes, and discover what separates - and what connects you to your European peers.

The Ship doesn’t stop when the night comes, that means that you will be working day and night to reach your destination! You will be divided into watches and work in shifts of 4 hours on, 8 hours off. That means two watches per day: one in daytime and one in the night. Don’t worry, your sleep pattern will soon adjust. You will stand lookout, navigate, man the helm, cook and clean – and you do it all as a team. By the time you reach the destination port you will be like a family.

Ports

Aarhus is a port on the northeast coast of Jutland, Denmark. One of its main attractions is the open air museum Den Gamle By, where historical buildings from all over Denmark have been relocated. But the 13th century cathedral is also well worth a visit. Aarhus is a relaxed place with enough to see and do, and its city centre is a favourite with Tall Ship crews who visit the city regularly. West of the city you’ll find lakes and forests, perfect for a hike.

Esbjerg is a beautiful coastal city in the South-West of Denmark, with the second biggest harbour in Denmark – a lively place full of fishing and shipping activities. You can observe the town’s maritime history in its attractions: from the Fisheries- and Maritime Museum, Esbjerg Skibet statue to the Men at Sea monument, everything brings you back to the sea. Visit also the Ribe Vikinge Center, a fun outdoor museum where you will meet the Vikings themselves!
