Morgenster:
Sal (CV) - Sal (CV)

03 January - 14 January 2016

Join the Morgenster for a Journey of discovery around the Cape Verde Archipelago. Start off the New Year barefoot on deck, together with the crew and your fellow Windseekers. This Journey alternates clear-weather sailing with plenty of island visits. Explore the towns and villages of this wonderful island group. Visit volcanic Fogo and climb up the porous lava-covered slopes to get a great view. Enjoy the persistent ocean breeze in the tropical heat. Dive into the deep blue ocean. Spend a night sailing under the stars. The landings are carefully selected and on most of the islands there is a local guide at hand to help you discover the best places of the island. Open to all ages, minimum age 15 years.

Programme Outline

During this voyage you will visit at least six beautiful islands. These islands are approximately a day of sailing apart. After each leg you can take the time to explore ashore. Go on organised excursions with local guides, or find your own way. At night the ship will mostly be anchored, but in some cases the ship will be sailing through the night. Learn to sail this magnificent ship while island hopping and exploring the world in historic ways. Follow the wind, onwards to your next destination!

Start exploring rustic Palmeira. Sail to the Leeward Islands visiting Santiago and the stunning bay of the village Tarrafal. Cross the ocean to São Vicente. Reach the magical beach of Mindelo, the largest harbour of the Cape Verde. Catch the ferry to Santo Antão. Take a walk down to Ribeira Grande with breath-taking views. Spot sharks near Santa Lucia on your way to São Nicolau. Join the expeditions and finish off your evening on the beach, dancing to local music together with the islanders.

While on board of the Oosterschelde, you can lend a hand on deck with handling the sails, perhaps learn how to navigate. But there’s also time to read a book in the library or on deck. Enjoy tasty meals together with your fellow Windseekers and the crew. Sleep in a comfortably furnished cabin or have a swim off the side of the ship in the warm Atlantic waters. Feel the ship heel over as she catches the wind, and marvel at the schools of flying fish that jump up out of the water alongside you.

The islands of Cape Verde are situated in the Atlantic Ocean, over 600 kilometres West of Senegal. There are 9 inhabited and a few uninhabited islands. The islands are volcanic. The official language is still Portuguese, but most inhabitants speak Creole or sometimes English or French. The climate is tropical. The sea has an almost constant temperature of 25 degrees and the trade wind comes from the Northeast almost year round. The water is filled with flying fishes, tuna, turtles and whales.

Ports

Sal is one of the three sandy eastern islands of the Cape Verde archipelago, together with Boa Vista and Maio. The island is a dream destination for windsurfing enthusiasts, due to its sandy beaches and persistent winds. Tourism is on the rise in Cape Verde, but outside of the beach resort of Santa Maria the island retains its relaxed feel. Explore the quiet streets with their brightly colored houses, the blue eye cave, and the saline flats. The sun shines 350 days a year, so bring sunscreen!
