A crossing and exploration of Greenland. Board the Tecla in Iceland and setting off into the Greenland Sund – the stretch of ocean that separates Iceland from Greenland. Often, a persistent band of fog marks the boundary between these two worlds. When it finally lifts, the first icebergs reveal themselves on the horizon. The East Coast of Greenland is wild and dramatic, largely uninhabited and full of wildlife like whales, seals, and polar bears. Choose from one of many secluded anchorages tucked away in fjords and between steep coasts. The highlights include Ikerasassuaq, Prins Christian Sund, where mountains towering over 1500 meters rise from either side; as well as archeological sites of Brattahlid, Ikigait and Hvalsey Church. After exploring inland, a soothing dip in a nearby hot spring may be just the thing. The final part of the voyage will carry you deeper into a labyrinth of fjords and inshore channels that seem endless. The small, colourful settlements bustle with life during summer. Your journey concludes in Nuuk, a bright and welcoming capital. It is well worth staying an extra day or two, so consider booking a hotel after disembarkation. The National Museum offers an excellent exhibition on the Thule and Dorset cultures, and the city’s surrounding hills provide countless rewarding hikes.

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland. As you approach from the sea, you’ll sea a modern city skyline with snowy volcanic mountains in the background. Reykjavík is quite cosmopolitan, with plenty of culture and entertainment. Go for a night on the town, or find a tour that takes you to see the glaciers, geysers, and volcanoes for which Iceland is famous. Reykjavík’s climate is less cold than you’d expect. At Nauthólsvík you’ll even find a geothermically heated beach!

Nuuk is the capital of Greenland and, with over 17,000 inhabitants its largest city. The earliest settlements date back to 2200 BC. In the 10th century Nuuk was inhabited by the Vikings and shortly after by Innuit people. Visit the Greenland National Museum and Archives, Katuaq Cultural Centre, Nuuk Art Museum and the Cathedral, and enjoy strolling around town and taking in its unique architecture.
